A lack of preparation can result in loss or injuries. Your preparation should begin months before, but if you’re short on time, here are the things to do 2 weeks before your half marathon.
Two weeks before
Begin your week by a long and final effort. The run should be about ten to fourteen miles. This will give your body a preview of what’s to come during the competition.
Keep your body ready and in shape by working out for thirty minutes each day. Make sure that you do a full-body workout with a specialization in the legs. You can try some beginner level cross-training on some days. Make sure that the routines you choose do not stress out your legs. The workout shouldn’t make your muscles sore. Be careful to not injure yourself.
On the last day of the week, run for forty-five minutes.
One week before
Just because the competition is near doesn’t mean you need to stress out your body. The week before the marathon is when you should take it easy. Take some rest days if you feel like you need it. Always listen to your body for signs. Do not push your body way outside your limits.
Run for about thirty minutes on Tuesday and Thursday. Do it at a leisurely pace. Walk during Monday and Wednesday. Those days should be your rest and recovery days.
Two days before
As the competition is nearing, it is understandable that you can’t make any drastic changes to your performance. The best you can do is to preserve the state of your body and to make sure that you are fit and ready.
Run or walk for about one to two miles. This is the best you can do. This routine will keep you warmed up for the marathon. Check the weather for the day of the marathon and prepare accordingly. Gather all the things that need to be packed. Prepare your running outfit that will be appropriate for the weather. Pack your trusted fuel, pacing chart, and your timer. Sleep for at least 8 hours.
One day before
Walk around the venue to know your bearings. Familiarize yourself with any landmarks that will help you know your way around. Try to get sufficient rest, too.
On the day
Arrive at least an hour and a half earlier than the call time. Walk around to warm your muscles up. You can avoid crowding by staying at the rear end.
As the race starts, try to run at a slower pace than usual. If you’re feeling confident, pick up the speed every now and then. Go all out on the last third of the stretch. Do not forget to have fun!
